Rest days are part of the plan

Muscles don’t get stronger during a workout but in the rest that follows. Why a rest day isn’t laziness, and how to make the most of it.

When we start something new we sometimes rush: a workout every day, no day off, and guilt when we miss a session. But the body needs time to recover and rebuild, and that happens on rest days.

What happens while you rest?

Exercise puts healthy stress on your muscles, and during rest the body repairs and strengthens them. Without enough rest, tiredness builds, motivation fades and the risk of injury goes up.

Active rest

A rest day doesn’t mean staying on the sofa all day, unless that’s what your body is asking for. You could:

  • Take an easy walk with a friend or the children.
  • Do ten minutes of stretching or gentle yoga.
  • Play, dance in the kitchen or tend to your plants.

Signs you need more rest

  • Tiredness that doesn’t lift after sleep.
  • Muscle soreness that lasts more than three days.
  • Trouble sleeping or swings in mood.
  • Losing interest in movement you used to enjoy.

Ammouna programmes put rest days in the schedule on purpose. When you see one, treat it as part of training, not a break from it. And after a hard week, coming back gently beats stopping altogether.

Ammouna offers general wellness guidance, not medical advice. Check with a healthcare professional before starting a new exercise or eating plan, especially during pregnancy, after birth, or with any health condition.
